Module No. 21 : The IYT yachtmaster Ocean Certificate is a commercial 200 ton Masters Certificate of Competency for operating yachts globally. The certificate is a qualification that indicates that the holder has sufficient knowledge of celestial navigation, to navigate globally using a sextant and to plan, undertake and manage an ocean passage, together with a comprehensive understanding of the factors involved with regard to routing and meteorology / weather matters.
To obtain the final IYT Yacht Master Ocean certificate of Competency, the candidate will have to complete a minimum 600 nautical miles passage and submit a detailed passage plan, sights and compass check to IYT for assessment.

Allow successful candidate to be responsible for command of a vessel up to 200 GT
(either auxiliary powered sailing vessels or power vessels - per certificate endorsement) and its crew, in any and all waters worldwide In all likely winds and sea condition day or night.

Prerequisits candidates must hold a valid IYT Master of Yacht Offshore Certificate
successfully complete a 6 day ocean / celestial navigation shorebased theory course
followed by the submission of practical sights and proof of a 600 mile rhumb line ocean passage.

Competency requirments The Candidate must be able :
To demonstrate a thorough and detailed knowledge of the theory components.

Theory and practical components This will take the form of a written examination.
The candidate is required to demonstrate successfully a sound and thorough knowledge and understanding of the following:
The Sextant
The Earth, the celestial sphere and the PZX triangle
Measurment of time
Meridian altitudes
Heavenly bodies sights
Compass checking
Satellite/electronic navigation systems
Passage planning
Great circle sailing
World meteorology

The candidate is required to demonstrate successfully
the skills, detailed working knowledge and understanding by submission of originals of at least the following work completed at sea:
The planning.
Sight reduction and plotting of a sun-run-meridian altitude or sun-run-sun.
A chart or copy of chart showing yacht's track.
A check for compass error using a heavenly body.
A detailed passage planning for an ocean voyage.
