This is a single module of 1 day duration designed to introduce a beginner to the sport of yavhting. This is the first step for everyone who is considering Yachting as a career or pastime. The practical component can be taken on either a sailboat or a powerboat.
Allow successful candidate to assist as a crew member of sailing or power vessel up to about 40 feet with a competent captain and or crew, In Light to moderate winds and sea conditions,during daylight hours.
Prerequisits There are no prerequisites for attending this course.
Competency requirments The material is introduced to the candidate.
The candidate is shown how to carry out the tasks and exerceises covered in the module,Is made aware of the correct and safe way of carrying these out
Theory and practical components The candidate is required to demostrate under supervision: Safety boarding of vessel from alongside, and/or dinghy.
Introduction to location of and demonstrate use of : Lifejackets, Flares, Liferaft, First Aid Kit, Fire Extinguishers, Safety Harnesses.
Location and Use of : Heads, Bilge pumps, water pumps (manual and pressurized), cooker and propane gas, Battery Selector Switch, Cabin Lights, General Housekeeping Rules.
Understands the need for suitable clothing/footwear and effects of heat, cold and seasickness. Engine Checks, Fuel, Mechanics, Instrumentation.
